Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) – delivery, implementation and migration
A powerful and reliable platform for Oracle databases without tuning servers, disks and networks. We propose a suitable model, verify it on your data, deliver and install it and move your databases.
- Performance – in our tests, ODA was 40–55 % up to 8× faster than the customers' existing hardware.
- Licensing by core – Oracle SE2 and EE, you license only the cores that are actually enabled.
- Easy administration and upgrades – unified patching and upgrade of the whole stack from hardware to database.
Try ODA on our box
We lend you our own ODA box with remote access. On a copy of your data you can verify feasibility, performance and licensing impact before you buy – with no investment and no risk. We evaluate the test results and recommend a suitable model and configuration.
Why Oracle Database Appliance
ODA is an engineered system (Oracle Engineered Systems): servers, storage, network and database software are tuned and tested by the vendor as one unit. Instead of assembling and tuning commodity hardware, you get a ready-made platform with a single procedure for installation, patching and support.
- Current ODA X11 range – X11-S (a compact server for smaller databases), X11-L (a larger server with expandable storage) and X11-HA (two nodes with shared storage for Oracle RAC and high availability).
- Oracle Database 19c and 23ai in Standard Edition 2 or Enterprise Edition.
- Licensing by enabled cores (capacity on demand) – you pay only for the performance you use, and you can add cores later.
- Easy upgrades – new database versions and patches are installed on ODA by a single, vendor-tested procedure; upgrades are much faster and safer than on commodity hardware.
- Standby site (DR) – Oracle Data Guard in Enterprise Edition, Dbvisit Standby in Standard Edition 2; Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) can also serve as the standby site.
- Any application on an Oracle database – together with your application supplier we get it running on ODA, including high availability.
Results for our customers
40–55 % fasterODA proof of concept with Oracle EE in a RAC cluster against comparable hardware, then migration of 7 production databases.
8× fasterTest, licensing study and migration of 9 instances (production, standby, test) from commodity hardware to ODA with Oracle SE.
ODA HA – two nodesOracle RAC on ASM, Database Vault and a standby site; later an upgrade to Oracle 19c.
From test to productionODA test with Oracle SE, choice of the model range, migration of production databases and Dbvisit Standby.
How we work
- Consultation and licensing analysis – your databases, applications, availability requirements and licensing options (SE2 / EE, number of cores).
- Test on your data – on the loaned ODA box we verify performance and feasibility.
- Delivery and implementation – as an Oracle partner we deliver ODA, install it and configure it according to best practice.
- Migration, standby site and support – we move the databases with minimal downtime, set up DR and take care of operation, patches and upgrades.
FAQ
How much does ODA cost and how is it licensed?
The price depends on the model, storage and database licences. The advantage of ODA is that Oracle Database is licensed only for the enabled cores, so you can start with fewer and add more as needed. We will prepare an indicative quote including licences.
Which model should we choose?
X11-S is enough for smaller databases, X11-L offers more performance and expandable storage, and X11-HA with two nodes is for Oracle RAC and the highest availability. Our recommendation is based on the test on your data and on your availability requirements.
Will our application run on ODA?
ODA runs standard Oracle Database, so applications that use an Oracle database today also work on ODA. We verify compatibility during the test, together with your application supplier.
How long will the downtime be during migration?
It depends on the size of the databases and the chosen method. Using Data Guard, Dbvisit Standby or Data Pump we prepare the migration so that the switchover happens in a planned window, typically within hours or less.
How do we handle the standby site?
Oracle Data Guard in Enterprise Edition, Dbvisit Standby in Standard Edition 2. The standby site can be a second ODA, your existing hardware or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
